Top 10 Nonfiction Books of The Week – Mental Health
Psychology is a BIG field. And nonfiction books about mental health? It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Greetings & Salutations Dear Readers!
This week I’m featuring ten titles on Mental Health.
Psychology is a BIG field. And nonfiction books about mental health? It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
We’ve done the research for you, though—and we’re happy to report that there are actually quite a few nonfiction books that have been written about mental health. The challenge of defining mental illness is an interesting one, and one that many of these books address in different ways. Some look at what happens when society changes its mind about what constitutes mental illness: for example, how homosexuality was once considered a disorder but is now widely accepted as normal. Others take on the current challenges of defining mental illness: for example, how trauma can affect people differently depending on their experiences and backgrounds, or how the definition of anxiety has become so broad that it’s no longer useful as a diagnostic category.
Other nonfiction books look at specific traumas or disorders: for example, a mother who loses her child may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression; someone who suffers an injury may develop chronic pain syndrome; someone who was sexually abused may suffer from PTSD or dissociative identity disorder (DID). Some nonfiction books address therapy—how it works and what it accomplishes—and others focus on memoir.
